BMI Calculator: Understand Your Health Metrics
The Body Mass Index (BMI) Calculator can be used to calculate your BMI value and determine your corresponding weight category — while also considering age. You can use the “Metric Units” tab (International System) or the “Other Units” tab to convert US or metric units as needed.
✨ Bonus: This calculator also computes the Ponderal Index (PI), which we explain further below.
What Is BMI?
BMI is a measurement of a person’s leanness or corpulence based on their height and weight. It quantifies tissue mass and provides a general indicator of whether a person has a healthy body weight for their height.
Based on the result, BMI helps classify someone as:
- Underweight
- Normal weight
- Overweight
- Obese
Different regions and age groups may have slight variations or subcategories, such as severely underweight or very severely obese.
⚠ Important: BMI is a screening tool, not a diagnostic — but it’s a useful indicator of whether further testing or lifestyle changes may be needed.
BMI Table for Adults (Age 20+)
Based on the World Health Organization (WHO):
Classification | BMI Range (kg/m²) |
---|---|
Severe Thinness | < 16 |
Moderate Thinness | 16 – 17 |
Mild Thinness | 17 – 18.5 |
Normal | 18.5 – 25 |
Overweight | 25 – 30 |
Obese Class I | 30 – 35 |
Obese Class II | 35 – 40 |
Obese Class III | > 40 |
BMI Table for Children and Teens (Age 2–20)
Based on CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention):
Category | Percentile Range |
---|---|
Underweight | < 5% |
Healthy Weight | 5% – 85% |
At Risk of Overweight | 85% – 95% |
Overweight | > 95% |
Health Risks of Being Overweight
Carrying excess weight increases risks of:
- High blood pressure
- Unhealthy cholesterol (high LDL, low HDL)
- Type 2 diabetes
- Heart disease and stroke
- Gallbladder disease
- Osteoarthritis
- Sleep apnea
- Certain cancers (breast, colon, liver, kidney)
- Reduced quality of life
- Depression and anxiety
- Higher risk of death
💡 Goal: Aim for a BMI below 25 kg/m² but always consult your doctor before making lifestyle changes.
Health Risks of Being Underweight
Being underweight carries risks like:
- Malnutrition, vitamin deficiencies, anemia
- Bone weakness (osteoporosis)
- Weakened immunity
- Growth issues in children
- Reproductive issues in women
- Complications during surgery
- Higher risk of mortality
Sometimes, being underweight signals an underlying condition (e.g., anorexia nervosa). Always consult your healthcare provider if concerned.
Limitations of BMI
While widely used, BMI has limits:
- It measures weight, not fat.
- It doesn’t account for age, sex, muscle mass, or bone density.
- Athletes or muscular individuals may appear “overweight” on BMI but are actually healthy.
- Older adults may have more body fat despite a “normal” BMI.
For children, factors like growth stage and height also affect BMI’s accuracy. BMI works best when combined with other health indicators.
BMI Formula
US Units:
BMI = 703 × (weight in lbs) ÷ (height in inches)²
Example:
For a person 5’10” (70 in) and 160 lbs → BMI ≈ 23.0
Metric Units:
BMI = weight (kg) ÷ [height (m)]²
Example:
72.57 kg ÷ (1.778 m)² ≈ 23.0
BMI Prime
BMI Prime compares your BMI to the upper “normal” limit (usually 25 kg/m²).
Formula:
BMI Prime = BMI ÷ 25
Classification | BMI | BMI Prime |
---|---|---|
Severe Thinness | < 16 | < 0.64 |
Moderate Thinness | 16 – 17 | 0.64 – 0.68 |
Mild Thinness | 17 – 18.5 | 0.68 – 0.74 |
Normal | 18.5 – 25 | 0.74 – 1 |
Overweight | 25 – 30 | 1 – 1.2 |
Obese Class I | 30 – 35 | 1.2 – 1.4 |
Obese Class II | 35 – 40 | 1.4 – 1.6 |
Obese Class III | > 40 | > 1.6 |
Ponderal Index (PI)
The Ponderal Index (PI) is similar to BMI but better accounts for extremely tall or short people.
Formula (US Units):
PI = height (in) ÷ ∛weight (lbs)
Formula (Metric):
PI = mass (kg) ÷ [height (m)]³
Example: For someone 5’10” (70 in), 160 lbs → PI ≈ 12.9
Final Note
✅ BMI and PI calculators are helpful tools — but they’re not the full picture. Always combine these numbers with medical advice, lifestyle assessment, and other health measures.
